Martin Eden

Martin Eden the Italian Martin Eden, by Pietro Marcello, won this Saturday the Giraldillo de Oro at the Seville Martin Eden European Film Festival, its highest award. The 16th edition of the contest has awarded this film for its, according to the jury, “intense and vibrant way in which it portrays the vital arc of its protagonist in continuous dialogue with the history of Italy”. The film, which began its festival career in Venice and will be released commercially in Spain, adapts the novel by Jack London. Marcello, who presented it on the first weekend of the Seville contest, has transferred the action to an Italian timelessness, and mixes fiction – which tells of the transformation of an illiterate fishmonger into a successful writer and political thinker at the same time as plunges into disenchantment- with documentary images.

The Grand Prize of the jury went to Technoboss, a film directed by Joao Nicolau, “for the elaborate, naive and musical sweetness of its tone and for the humanism it exudes”, the jury praised. Israeli director Nadav Lapid has won the best director award for his film Synonyms, a film that won the Golden Bear at the last Berlinale, and the best screenplay has gone to La Gomera, a thriller written by its director, the Romanian Corneliu Porumboiu , and that takes place on the Canary Island of the same name.
