Mandy the first image of Mandy, which appears under the opening credits, is quite a statement of intent: it could well be an Mandy aerial shot of a forest seen from above, or a pharaonic plantation of marijuana buds. And we lean towards the latter. The course of the film can easily disprove this theory, as this is the closest thing to a trippy trip you will experience in a long time. More than that psychotropic bit from Easy Rider or the LSD-esque moment from Across the universe. Even more than any Transformers movie. This is a good trip. And above full of colored fumes. What more clues do you need to determine that this movie is built on hallucinogenic foundations?

The new from Panos Cosmatos, which has been collecting compliments and various awards all year (the most recent, Best Direction at the Sitges Festival), arrives this week on the Spanish billboard with the aim of being more of a sensory experience than a conventional film. There we meet Red Miller (Nicolas Cage), a woodcutter who, when he has just cut down a tree and it is about to fall, turns his back on it and leaves. Because he is above seeing trees fall, or controlling it for safety so that no one gets hurt. And then he smokes a cigarette and throws it on the ground, because he doesn’t care that there are millions of leaves and branches that are burning. What difference does it make: he only has eyes for his girlfriend Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), who spends her days drawing jungle temples and walking around her mountain home in a Black Sabbath t-shirt and a mysterious scar on her cheek.
