Little Joe

Little Joe the fifth feature film by Austrian director Jessica Hausner, Little Joe, has an obvious vocation Little Joe to be disturbing in any context; I can imagine that it managed to disturb the public who saw it almost a year ago during its presentation in the official section of the Cannes Film Festival, but seen now, in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, a film that takes place in a kind of industrial greenhouse in which laboratory its scientists skip the protocol for handling a virus with which genetically manipulating flowers destined to produce artificial happiness for those who inhale their pollen, more than disturbing, can be terrifying.

Hausner and her co-screenwriter Géraldine Bajard write a kind of dystopia from which very important ethical approaches are opened, or can be opened, applied to the limits of scientific research. The protagonist of the film, Alice (Emily Beecham), does not respond to the stereotype of the mad scientist so often abounded in literature and cinema, although it is paradigmatic that she seeks relief from her affective disabilities in the consultation of a psychoanalyst (Lindsay Duncan).
